Has anyone heard about the decisions made by the Convention of the Left in Manchester recently?

Basically, roughly 200 representatives from several leftist groups gathered in the city a few weeks ago. What is relevant is the measures implemented to tackle the BNP. Some leftist parties have agreed to stand down in areas where the BNP is strong which will hopefully enable other parties to limit their chances of success. So for instance, Respect may not participate and back the Green party in certain regions.

What do you all think of the measures? Will this be enough to stop the BNP in certain areas? What do you propose as additional measures or alternatives?

i think the English left needs a truly leftist party to stand in elections instead of that beast Respect.

Yeh, but there just isn't anything else there really. The Campaign for a New Worker's Party doesn't seem to of taken off and nobody seems to want to touch anything the SWP get involved ie the Left List. So, I don't see an alternative to RESPECT at the moment...

good idea that.

I know that the Green party wouldnt be revolutionary, but if they are solidly against the BNP it gives our side something to say to people.

"Vote Green will make things better AND keep out the racists"

Sounds much better than

"Dont Vote BNP vote for the people who screwed you over instead".

I think it's a very good idea. While the right-wing parties (at least here in Germany) have agreements that they won't run for elections against each other, the left often bitterly fights each other and divides the votes to the pleasure of conservative/right-wing parties.
