what got me into listening to Hip Hop was Boogie Down Production (BDP) and the solo Projects of KRS-One (their Rapper).
Also the Roots are great...and maybe you'd enjoy Blackstar...there is a bunch of good stuff out there.

Not all of this is Political, but Cypress Hill isn't really either.

oh...the Dead Prez (or spelled differently maybe) are pretty political.

maybe i should dig up my old collection...

Yeah dude Dead Prez are a influential band in my world. They make me think. KRS One did a cool song with Rage Against The Machine and The Last Emporer that is neat.

This is La Rainbeaux... Some good rappers, though not always political, but they are good:

Common
Blackstar
Talib Kewli & Hi-Tek
Mos Def
Nas

Also, there's an anti-Capitalist (maybe) rap duo (I think it's a duo) called "The Coup." I've never heard them myself, but I hear they're good.. Check 'em out.

Dead Prez
NWA
Public Enemy
Tupac
Black L.I.B
N-12
Poor Righteous Teachers
some DMX
some Wu Tang
J.Uprising (i can never find some of him:( )

for heavy political messages, i recommend thrash, anarcho, and crust like Crass, Conflict, Subhumans, Riot/Clone, Passive Resistance, Anti-Flag, Dead Kennedys, and stuff like that.

Reggae is good for it too. Like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, and shit.

Oh, El Brujo, I love you! You've got really good taste in music.

Also, some fresh stuff to check out is:

The Fugees
Arrested Development :)
Digable Planets

And, though it's more Latin-y than Hip-Hoppy (CDNow calls it "Hip-hop-meets-reggae-meets-Latin- meets-acid jazz" ), it's still good and they've got some political messages, especially the songs on their album "Embrace the Chaos" especially the songs "Embrace the Chaos" (they did it with Common) and "Guerrillero" (even though I'm not able to translate everything they say in it, I still love it).

Definitely, comrade!

I urge everyone to check out Promoe and Loop Troop, starting with "Biggest Hustle" , "Long Arm of the Law" and "Government Music"

Totally hardcore underground guys that used to have to live on the street and steal. Anyway, their lyrics are probably the best political rhymes I've heard in my life.

Political Rap?? Hmmmm. Not a whole lot of groups are that political. I guess Mos Def can be, the Roots.

Anybody still like Arrested Development? I was digging through some old CDs and found the solo album that Speech put out. The second song is called "ask somebody who ain't" it goes "If you think this system's working, ask somebody who ain't." One could construe this song to mean the capitalist system. Am I stretching?

Other groups worth noting:

a tribe called quest
ed og
nappy roots
krs-one/bdp
public enemy
de la soul
jungle brothers

Hey all those main stream groups maybe cool, but for the real deal you need to go underground. My friend introduced me to this hip hop group called PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS. And the kick ass. They drop old school jazz beats and wicked, messages. They start the album down playing other rappers for not saying anything worth while to the people. Man I highly recommend this. May be a hard find.

menshevik-Soulsonic: weren't they a hip-hop/funk band in the 90s? Are they still around? I used to work at college radio station back in the mid-ninties. I think I remember hearing them.

also-anyone ever heard of Paris? He can be deep.

samaniego-people under the stairs are hot--i think i heard them a few months back on a college station.

I listed Bambaataa and the SS Force (I think, too lazy to check).

J,

Bambaataa and the SS Force were a hip-hop group back in the 70's and 80's and made some of the greatest music for breakdancin' and body poppin'.
He is known as the 'Godfather of hip-hop' because of his influence and his input to hip-hop.

The televisions have eyes
Your modern religion is live
Plotting a collision world wide
Watch the hour glass, the power class
Showing currency for world supremacy
Burroughs is burned down deliberately, son
We ain't about whats devil level
Smell the gun metal
King to mo' man
I read Mao Tse-Tung
Feel the foul taste that run on my tongue
Burn a L for everyone of my sons
There so much more than just herb in my lungs
Similar to spilt Mercury,
With enough force
They could've killed Hercules
This whole nation was built
Virtually, from capital to captivity
The earth could be the modest ??
You not listening
It's cold outside
They got the whole South side
Using bar codes,
Military blocks on all the state roads
And worse, somebody's chold got hung
They took his pants off,
Covered his whole body with ants, and cut his hands off
The type of shit that have your brain bleedin'
They about to start scanning the back of niggas hands
And get your vein readin'
They call it New World Order
But, son, this game is in the fourth quarter
World War 3, don't drink the water
Because...

These are the times that try a nigga soul
Population control, we wasting time chasing gold
They after more than your mind
They want your nation as a whole
It's time to take off the blindfold (I know)

Yep, the coup's origional album cover was pretty cool...but also kinda creepy post 9/11

so, the coup rules (they also have the best rap lyric ever in "me and jesus the pimp..."...check this out!..."His name was jesus(hesus) but his pimp name was jesus, slapped the hoes to pieces with his plastic prosthesis!")

Dead Prez is awsome!
