This is an excellent film I watched about the battle of hill 3234, a defensive battle that soviet paratroopers fought and won against great odds in the last major campaign in Afghanistan conducted by the USSR. Although there are some inaccuracies, I thought it was a pretty damn good film and I really enjoyed watching it particularly because it gives a very very rare glimpse into the Soviet perspective and a somewhat modern Russian analysis of a war that is rarely portrayed in film in the english-speaking world. Has anybody seen it? It was refreshing to watch for me because usually we don't get to see the other perspective. Its kind of a shame that many of the war vets have been 'left in the dust' and forgotten so to speak as they were returning during the collapse of the union - I know many American war vets have suffered similar fates.

An interesting film to see the Soviet perspective of that war, but I thought the combat scenes were very unrealistic. There are huge numbers of Afghan guerrillas running at the Soviets... Just like a human wave, but the Soviets have Kalashnikovs. That should be a big number of dead guerrillas in a few seconds. Surely the guerrillas used more clever tactics than that?
