Anything stuff by 'Promoe' (of the Looptroop Rockers) is pretty anarchic...not many people seem to have heard of him on here though :(

The Welfare Poets, they're based in NY. They have a MySpace you can check out and their own website. Really good music.

Also, Cypress Hill. They are very active in terms of drug legislation and while they aren't strictly political, they do have some songs related to legalisation and drug culture activism.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Saul Williams, poet and rapper, a personal friend of Zach de la Rocha and Trent Reznor, his songs include protest against commercial gangstarap, workers opression, racism and more. His fans were a bit annoyed when 'list of demands' was used for a nike commercial although Saul himself denounced by stating that this way his message was wider spread.
In 2007, he was touring along with Rage against the Machine and Serj Tankian

There are some names that I can't believe haven't been mentioned.
Blue Scholars are probably one of the illest duos in alternative hip hop (and they're Maoists!)
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qREupDMEPAU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qREupDMEPAU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Bambu is also really sick, he's from LA and a Maoist as well
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8cdQoq2fsZ0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8cdQoq2fsZ0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Also Common Market, which shares the same DJ as Blue Scholars, real good.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cf_ViI--kTI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cf_ViI--kTI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The Coup, self-declared communist from here in the Bay.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fZ_gFyB6GnA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fZ_gFyB6GnA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
ALSO: Kidz In The Hall, Patriarch (despite the name, has some radical ideas and is militantly pro-Palestine), & Native Guns (Bambu + Kiwi).

check out 'Shadow Business' if you haven't, its about sweat shops.
Also, 'Uncommon Valor A Vietnam Story' - as the title suggests, its about Vietnam and the feature verse on there by Rugged Man is good (the verse is about his dad's experience in vietnam.
But yes you are correct, they are not very political and in my opinion they are not very good. Vinnie paz is a shit MC generally, although they usually have nice beats
