Micropolix Theme Park Gives Kids a Taste of the Real World through Kiddie Capitalism (http://i.gizmodo.com/5156230/micropolix-theme-park-gives-kids-a-taste-of-the-real-world-through-kiddie-capitalism)

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/stills/kiddiecapitalism_gizmodo.flv.jpgMove over, Disneyland—life isn't always magical. CNN (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/business/2009/02/18/goodman.spain.kiddie.capitalism.cnn) investigates Micropolix, a new theme park in Madrid, Spain, that teaches kids about the economy and the importance of money by making them work for their fun—literally.

Dubbed as a mini-metropolis, the theme park is designed to be like a smaller version of an actual city, where the children must earn money in order to pay for any activities they want to participate in during their visit.

Upon arriving at the theme park, the kids must first go to the bank and wait in a line to get a tiny bit of "start-up" play money to get them going. However, if they run out or they want more cash, they have to go to the employment offices to get a job—including everything from gas station attendants to models in a fashion show—which will trade manual labor for a paycheck. With this paycheck, they are able to pay for driving lessons—through a simulated video game—their license, their car insurance, and gas, among many other things.

No thanks, I'll stick with Disneyland. [CNN (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/business/2009/02/18/goodman.spain.kiddie.capitalism.cnn) - Thanks Helen!]

It could be cool.

Does it include kiddie recessions, homeless kiddies, kiddie labor unions, kiddie street protests, and kiddie riot cops who teargas and club the other kiddies when they get out of line?

From what I read on another news site: not exactly. There is no unemployment. It is the land of possibilities. Every kid can have a rags-to-riches story. Just like real life. ;)

So it's basically assuming a Randian capitalist utopia?

God, this must have been the idea of a sadist. :crying:
First the poor kiddie's holidays are ruined by this nightmare of a theme park and then, when they are grown up their world outlook is destroyed if they discover the "true joys" of capitalism and that there's only a slight chance of getting riches but a good chance of ending up in rags.

I think they have similar theme park somewhere in Florida, but of course not a part of the main Disney/Universal theme parks in Orlando.

I would lol so hard if the kiddie economy eventually collapsed due to lack of regulations and intensified kid struggle.

lol. I bet they make this Capitalist world seem so "perfect" with no homelessness or class struggle. We should make a theme park to teach kiddies Communism. ;) Those kiddies can then go to this Capitalist theme park and overthrow the kiddie bourgeoisie.

LOL. Ridiculous.

I had to do some similar shit to this in elementary school called enterprise city where we all had jobs and made money to buy stuff. There was a massive epidemic of stealing from the candy store.

I seen this on Fox the other day. It really glorifies Capitalism in the eyes of the kids.

They need kiddie communism

Don't they pretty much practice it at a young age already? You know, sharing and all that jazz.

That's not exactly capitalism, seeing as there doesn't appear to be a capitalist class. On the other hand, the capitalist class have as their primary weapon the idea that they don't exist, and this may just be perpetuating it in a similar way to the income-based 'class' system.

It's a kids ride ffs, why would it implement Marxist dichotomy?

From the sounds of it, it sounds like the kids are learning socialism rather than capitalism, the labour is getting its full value and isn't be exploited for surplus value.

Doesn't sound like there's a boss class as one of the jobs.

the problem here is clearly misleading people about what capitalism is
there's a big fuck difference between receiving rewards and living in a capitalist society
