Gather stuff that you or your friends dont want, find a space to put it, and put up fliers to advertise. We are using a garage and have it open once a week right now.
Everybody has useable shit that they throw away so this should be a no brainer for reducing consumption and building a culture of mutual aid for your community. If you want more cheap plastic crap to distribute check out thrift store / salvation army / goodwill dumpsters. They throw away tons of stuff that they can not store, and some of it is really cool.
We aren't going to be having any revolution if we dont create alternatives to capitalism!

freeganism kicks ass. Be on the look out for dumpster full of good shit from the peanut butter recall in the US. I got hundreds of cliffbars, lunabars and other granola bars that are all perfectly save. I gave a large number to random homeless people and my friends who are homeless. It seemed to alleviate their poverty for the moment while they were chowing down on cliffbars(which are chaulk full of vitamins) instead of mcdonalds double cheese burgers.
I have an anarchist comrade in Richmond, VA who set up something called a "really free market" where people come together to find stuff they need and get rid of stuff that they don't, and everything is FREE. info on her blog Anarchy and Social Movements (http://anarchymo.wordpress.com/tag/really-really-free-market/)

Google freecycle dot com and put in your city or locale, and you'll get the freecycle group near you. You can post for things you want or need, or you can post stuff you want to give away. (You can't charge money for anything; it's all to be given away.)
I've given away tons of stuff this way in the Marin County freecycle group - clothes, printers, framed pictures, office furniture, baskets and storage containers, a fax machine, and after a home remodel I gave away a lot of furniture and some of the original kitchen cabinets that were pulled out and leftover hardwood flooring. The person who contacts you and wants the stuff arranges for the pick-up. It's also a great way to pass on extra moving boxes you don't need.

Beat me to it. :)

Edit: Oh, also, if you live near Baltimore-- http://www.bookthing.org. The have well over a hundred and fifty thousand titles available at any given time.
I think there's a freemarket somewhere in Baltimore as well, but I've never seen an effort of this kind as consistently well stocked as the book thing.

Ok, we can stop with the back and forth now. I let it go one and people on both sides of the debate are continually getting more hostile. Anything not related to helping comrades with advice or help on how to run these stores will be trashed.

People seem intent on discussing this, and that's fine. However, so as not to saturate this thread I've moved the debate here (http://www.revleft.com/vb/freeganism-discussion-split-t103192/index.html).
