not a fan of the awful makeup on forrest whittaker..however he did a good job with bad material.. but its flawed by the story being through the eyes of a northern european...

a bit schlocky for me - would have prefered a better political analysis in the film of the significance of past colonialism, economic factors and Amins rise to power in the historical context imho... but these days this is probably asking too much from a film...

thought most of the characters were not very 3 dimensional for the above reasons..

Forest Whittaker's performance aside, I thought it was a really mediocre film.

Isn't that the movie about that African Dictator? The title is so misleading. lol

Not my type of film, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the story was invigorating, although I wasn't sure how much of it I believed.

I thought it was pretty good from what I saw of it. I didn't see it from the beginning but Whitakers portrayal of Amin was excellent, albeit Amin being a complete asshole. Overall I'd say it was a pretty decent film.

Enjoyed it as a film and Whitaker. as others have said, made a good job of it. The whole concept was far fetched but as a mainstream release I thought it was far better than the usual drivel. I also agree with S.O.I.... anything that mocks the english and "englishness" can't be all bad. ;)

For a far more realistic and indeed gut wrenching view of African history and politics try Hotel Rwanda.

Lolz. Narrow it down a bit, eh?

I enjoyed the movie. It covered Idi Amin's erratic personality and public persona fairly well. It was light on politics, but again, it was made for Hollywood, and how many people who saw it do you think actually know where Uganda is?

Hotel Rwanda is enjoyable as well, but it can be one-sided, as both Hutu and Tutsis perpetrated some rather horrendous deeds on eachother, thanks to the historical Dutch cementing of these almost entirely imagined communities in colonial times.

I don't understand your claim that the film was "one-sided". Are you perhaps confusing the civil war with the genocide? Both events happening in parralel and linked but seperate. The film was primarily about the genocide of the Tutsis by the Hutu.

Many Hutu moderates were also slaughtered (by Hutu's) during the genocide and many thousands more died in the refugee camps they fled to after the victory of the RPF. But I was not aware of any systematic genocide commited against the Hutu comparable with that against the Tutsi. I may of course be mistaken.

The key points for me were the inspirational actions of Paul Rusesabagina, the apparent ease with which people can be induced to commit atrocities and the impotence/dissinterest of the UN and the west in general.

I thought it was an awesome movie. I actually saw it with a Sudanese friend who can speak kiswahili, and in the film there's a fair bit of stuff you hear that isn't subtitled, so it was cool to have him next to me translating the stuff that wasn't subtitled.
