Sorry I can't post a link, but this is from Reuters on February 19.

The economic catastrofuck continues...

Latvia's coalition government collapsed on Friday after the prime minister resigned to stem a fall in popularity during a deep economic crisis.
President Valdis Zatlers said he had accepted Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis's resignation and would start talks with all parties on a new government.

It was the second European government to succumb to the economic crisis after Iceland.

Political instability has added to the economic problems of the small Baltic state, igniting a riot on Jan. 13. The country had to take a 7.5 billion euro ($9.43 billion) IMF-led rescue loan last year.

"It is possible they will be able to work out a new coalition but I think what it really means is new elections," said Lars Christensen, head of emerging markets research at Danske Bank.

"There will only be one issue at stake and that will be the austerity measures and the IMF deal. It is possible that means some parties may look to move away from the IMF deal, which would be very bad news for the Latvian economy."

Mareks Seglins, chairman of the largest coalition party, the People's Party, told reporters he and the second biggest coalition party, the Union of Greens and Farmers, thought the prime minister's resignation was the only way to help boost public trust in the unpopular administration.

Godmanis, who led Latvia when it quit the former Soviet Union in 1991, was rebuffed recently when he tried to bring an opposition party into the government. He survived a motion of no confidence vote in parliament earlier this month.

Latvia's crisis, which began during the global credit crunch, has accelerated and the finance ministry has forecast a drop in the economy this year of 12 percent, meaning further budget cuts are likely.

I think Estonia is next in line, structurally estonian society seems to be very similar to that of Latvia (large and quite oppressed Russian minority, quasi-monopoly on power held by neoliberals and conservatives) and their parliament just passed a bill cutting € 516 million from the national budget, one of the measures being a 10% wage cut for civil servants.

All the former Republics are next in line. capitalism is killing them. the People want change and they will get change. The People are the strongest army correct.

That's right. The small states which seperated from the USSR and hoped that capitalism will improve their life standarts are now seeing what capitalism really means. And I doubt that they are now better off without the USSR.

it starts with the smaller Ex-Republics then moves on to the bigger ones. Sooner or later the Russian Federation is going to collapse.

Ex Socialists countries will collapse first I believe, the time since the socialism "collapsed" in Eastern Europe has not been enough for these countries to pick up against new rules of the game.
Similar thing are happening here in Ex-Yugoslavia, although we were well introduced to market economy much before the Ex-USSR, but still the effects are horrible.

I can't even bring out the trash without seeing two homeless digging the garbage can, that shit makes you sad from the morning on.
And the majority of people will admit they lived much better during the socialist rule. This is not some crazy commie nostalgia guys, we actually lived much much better :(

Unfortunately the nationalistic element swept sense out of people's minds for two decades now, but let's wait and see what happens with the crisis, maybe it sobers some people up

Sound like the guy is a typical monetarist idiot. IMF austerity measures have already destroyed enough economies in Latin America and the guy still doesn't learn? Austerity measures just mean more unemployment and poverty, all in the name of fighting inflation.

While it's true that less money chasing more goods keeps inflation in check, there are two aspects to that observation. Either you can concentrate on making sure there's less money, or you can concentrate on making sure there's more goods. The second scenario obviously leads to more employment - I just can't believe the stupidity of pro-capitalist economists sometimes.

Agreed. The guy obviously has no contextual basis historically of what it means to have to take loans from the IMF.

Wow. Is Latvia actually totally fucked?..it only seemed like yesterday when all we were hearing in the british media of how well their economies are doing since the very ruff patch after the fall of the soviet union. So much for the market religion..serves it right for being arrogant.
