Ok, well I admit I like a couple Metal bands such as Nightwish, but overall I can't stand it. Most of it just sounds like screaming to me. One thing that really defines "good" music to me is good vocals.

I don't know, but most metal songs I have heard just sound like screaming.
Most modern 'metal' isn't metal (see: Shitknot), and does just sound like screaming. Thus my curiosity, seeing as there is loads of metal without harsh vocals (that make up the majority of ones that I listen to, actually).
Still, good vocals? What kind of vocals would you say are good?
Try 'The Devil's Hall of Fame' by Beyond Twilight. Also 'Heaven and Hell' by Black Sabbath (try 'Mob Rules' if you like that), 'Holy Diver' by Dio, 'Into the Depths of Sorrow' and 'Through the Darkest Hour' by Solitude Aeturnus, and 'Watching From a Distance' by Warning.
Then again, to fully enjoy metal, one has to get used to listening in a rather different way to vocal-centric music, which took me a while to get used to. Especially metal with harsh vocals, or just fairly crappy vocals like Blind Illusion (who are still awesome). Or, hell, demon frog vocals (Demilich).
Also, I would recommend Jag Panzer's 'Ample Destruction'. It's pretty much the pinnacle of USPM, and Harry Conklin is god.
I like some screamo n shit, but in general metal sucks. Most of it doesn't mean anything, and is unoriginal and pointless. Nightwish sucks.

Power metal bands like Sonata Arctica are definitely a guilty pleasure for me. Hammerfall and Rhapsody of Fire. Especially Rhapsody, with the singer's funny Italian pronunciations while singing in English.

Normally I don't see a lot of metal, I tend to listen 'softer' genres of rock music.
That said, they were great each time and put on a blindingly good show, as have most of the other metal bands I have seen.

Fair enough. I know a few people who are fellow USPM fans but like Sonata Arctica, so it's probably more a matter of taste. Also, when it comes to European power metal, have you heard Hibria? Hibria are pretty fast, and if you like Ecliptica-era (and their similar pre-Unia albums) Sonata Arctica, you should like them. Of course, they're fairly different, but still awesome. Also, most SA fans I've seen enjoy early Stratovarius albums, such as 'Visions'.

And as far as the bass thing goes, in my band, its a running joke that our bassist isn't necessary. (I'm a bassist, too, so it's ok for me to make jokes like that:laugh:)
In truth, it's a lie. We add Cryptopsy-esque bass parts, and even when our bassist is following my guitar part, it adds much more depth to the sound.

I love metal, as I also love hardcore, punk, some hip hop, indie, electro. It really just depends on what you hear from each genre. Every genre is filled with mediocre/awful music (nightwish fits under this in my humble opinion). You just have to seek out the real stuff.
As far as screaming is concerned, sometimes it boggles my mind to think that there are people who cant stand it. But I can understand it, if all someone is exposed to is formulaic and generic screaming bands, than there isn't much reason to appreciate it. For me, screaming and yelling is just as poignant as singing, so long as I know theres a reason they are screaming. There is something about someone yelling at the top of their lungs, giving it their all that conveys a passion and sincerity that you don't find too often in most mainstream music.
If I am going to talk about the injustices of capitalism through the medium of music, I am sure as hell not going to sing it, I would rather convey anger and through anger achieve a release.

I am with you on screaming. I used to be into a lot of death metal (still am) but I've sort of moved past the whole cookie-monster growling. I've always preferred bands that had vocals more like Behemoth, Neurosis, Pantera, etc that's more like scream-shouting than growling. A lot more passion in that than growling, IMO.
Also, I don't understand how some stuck-up people can say that even some power metal singers are "screaming too much" when they sing aggressively. I've heard people say that Symphony X's Russell Allen "screams."

Dutch Gothic acts enjoy large popularity outside the country. Within Temptation, After Forever and Epica seem to have thousands of fans. When I saw them, I did so at relatively small and free concerts.
Free concerts are only a fantasy where I'm from, unless you like to listen to shitty seafarer folk

Myself, I think most rap nowadays is junk. But there is gold amongst the muck - Onyx is an example of a rap group (or is it hip-hop? I find it hard to tell) that I like.
Yeah, totally agree. Scroobius Pip is another example of gold amongst the muck - probably among the best lyricists I have ever come across.

Too bad they've turned into a fairly average band now. :(
Iron Maiden and Judas Priest etc sound cheesy and silly to me

Black Sabbath are metal...
Hmm, yeah, I suppose that's true, though I always considered them to fall under the Hard Rock category as well.
And I forgot to mention, Iron Maiden is also good.

Well, as one of the most important bands that put metal on the map in the first place, calling Sabbath metal only makes sense. Of course, it's subjective. But to me, Sabbath stand closer to the metal bands (in fact, they are one of the most important ones) than to the Aerosmiths, Guns 'n Roses and Van Halens of this world.

Yeah, so it is hard to not diss metal when so many metalheads seem to be complete fucktards .

I agree that most rap nowadays is junk. Onyx isn't really rap nowadays though. They were in their heyday between '93 to '95.

I only listen to metal and game/movie soundtracks. If you like music there is a genre of metal you like, and you just haven't searched enough.
And how did this thread start? So far I have rarely met any leftists who like metal.
Anyway I am now listening to "Megadeth: Blackmail the universe"

Well there's crap in all genres, but to just write metal off as screaming and bad musicianship is extremely stupid.
One just needs to listen to Death, Carcass or Fear Factory to see how the genre can also be complete genius.
Most of the mainstream metal they show on MTV of course aren't nowere near that level

Exactly my point, claiming to have knowledge of metal and hard rock only because they played GH.
The metal scene is, in part, a subculture existing out of people who are disgusted by trendsetters and such. Capitalist influence and their efforts to make a buck out of this scene is generally shown with disgust, though I wouldnt say that the metal scene is generally on the left. I think its quite a-politic

Call me judgmental, but when it comes to metal bands I'm usually overcome with thoughts of superficial rebellion, trying way to hard...
I want some reggae & soul, and some serious politics, not a show of black clothing, annoying angst and image. There are a few fairly decent metal songs for me, but it's rare, and they draw is fleeting.

Very true... But there are a few metal bands that actually have a good messege to put out... VERY FEW.
Ever since Pantera broke up, the only metal Ill actually listen to is Sepultura or anything Max Cavalera has done... And if you count Rage Against the Machine metal then yeah im definatly a fan of them.

I hate this attitude. People who define their musical taste as much by what they hate as what they like. Especially when it's unrelated; in a thread about metal why bring up what you think of rap?
Personally I think metal is great and I feel less indignant and angry about comments like A_Ciarra's describing metal as "a show of black clothing, annoying angst and image" and more a sense of pity that someone doesn't appreciate some of the greatest music in the world.
If you don't like metal it's your loss and no skin off my nose. But I would make this defence for a lot of genres.

Ok, well I admit I like a couple Metal bands such as Nightwish, but overall I can't stand it. Most of it just sounds like screaming to me. One thing that really defines "good" music to me is good vocals.
I just remembered this! I used to be in a hardcore/progressive band and the first show we played was with some of the biggist hardcore bands in the aera that actually believed in true music with a great message. Well the lead singer for a vegan, edge band called Fisticuffs, was at the show. After our set he was like "wow man I really liked the music, I also loved the lyrics" My mother was there also(she is very supportive of the things that I do haha) Well when she heard him say that she asked him "I could hardly even hear what he was saying, why do you guys have to scream all the time?" (this is the reason why I posted this) Eric(fisticuffs singer) told my mother that "Sometimes, whenever no one will listen to your messege or what you think needs to be heard is not heard... you need to scream it so it will grab their attention and they will listen to your messege."
Thats pretty much why people scream so much in metal or hardcore for that matter.
Just thought I would share that. Also if you want some of the bands who played the show, or just have a good message to put out to the world then here you go: [all of them are from North Carolina] Deathblow(www.myspace.com/deathblow (http://www.myspace.com/deathblow)) Fisticuffs(http://www.myspace.com/fisticuffsx) Torch Runner(http://www.myspace.com/torchrunnernc) Never In Life(http://www.myspace.com/neverinlifenc)

I also think that the anti-metal people are using metal as a very narrow term. As in, they associate metal with simply stuff as the screaming, generic breakdown stuff like Pantera or Machine Head and other such nonsense.
Metal can be a very creative thing completely different from all other forms of music, like Tool or Sunn 0))), (which I personally wouldn't call metal but are globally classified as so) for example.

you want good vocals? well this is what the doctor orders :) he has a brilliant voice!! and sounds better live:)
I was actually going to mention Kamelot to dispel the screaming myth (another great song is "Wander"). I love metal but most of the stuff I listen to is the more symphonic/progressive/power metal stuff like Kamelot, Symphony X, Rush, Iron Maiden, Elvenking, Rhapsody of Fire...
Speaking of great vocalists, Fabio Lione is one of my favorites. He sings for Vision Divine, Rhapsody of Fire and Labyrinth. Italian vocalists FTW.
Yeah, there's some shit metal but saying "metal sucks" based on Cannibal Corpse is kind of like saying "punk sucks" based on Green Day.

Metal is NOT "a show of black clothing" ---- that would just be my general feelings that often get in the way of me enjoying much of it. The imaging for me just get's in the way of the music possibilities. I like things more down to earth overall. But to say that metal is strictly "a show" would be for me to spit on music all together, and I could never do that in just about any genre.
I DO like some metal myself, but more like Crisis with Holocaust, or the early rock bands that take (and retain) some blues, or African percussion influence rather than stripping that out as a feature of their style. I don't feel a loss about not enjoying metal much, I just know what musical elements move me to a greater degree than another, and at which moments I prefer one style over another for any given mood.
It's always important not to read excessive ideals into people's general comment's too, no matter who or what is being commented on.

I believe your thinking of "goth" metal (not really metal but for some reason, middle school kids like to think it is) Ala Marilyn Manson (whom I do despise, for reasons stated in another thread, don't want this turning into another thread about him.) Either that, or you're looking for something in music in general that just isn't there.
And to GiantBear91, obviously, you've never really checked out grindcore when it comes to the message. Think of really fast, really heavy anarcho-punk in both sound and message.

If no one will listen to your message they're sure as hell not going to be more likely to listen to it when you're yelling it unintelligably.
Something I have to say does almost annoy me about 'political' 'screamy' bands is that they can say the most ridiculous crap but still have a bunch of followers who think it's 'so true, man' because the lyrics sheet looks meaningful.
But yeah, somebody yelling a message over some power chords, to the metalheads/crust punks out there probably does give it more authority. Not to everybody else, though. Not to the normal people. ;)
I can't stand anything with heavy distortion and screaming. I don't even like electric instruments (with a few mild exceptions - usually jazz, blues, and the Beatles), so I'd say I probably hate metal and screamo and similar loud, sloppy music more than any other kind.

I find 2 faults here....
1. Likening metal to screamo.
2. Generalizing metal as "sloppy". Listen to Dying Fetus or Origin. I don't care whether you like it or not, but it is anything but "sloppy."

Metal is many things.. but sloppy? Hell no. It's TIGHT and COORDINATED!Well, to be fair here, some metal bands could perhaps be characterized as sloppy, such as Fastkill. However, Fastkill are sloppy in a good way. Though mainly tight, yes. Certainly, I've never heard anyone call the 'Beyond the Realms of Death' solo sloppy. Interestingly, the live version in 'The Ultimate Priest in the East' (not released on 'Unleashed in the East' for some strange reason) was quite a bit better than the album version of that song.
