They say amino acids are the building blocks of life. Can someone explain this, like a lay person could understand? What constitutes life, and how was it formed? Why can't we create life in a lab?

Have you thought of doing some background reading into the topic? There are plenty of places on the web that can teach you to a much better level than a public forum.

In the spirit of being the leader of this forum and being slightly more helpful, I'll provide a couple of links:

Wikipedia article on "Origin of Life" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_life).

TalkOrigins page with multiple FAQs on the subject (http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/abioprob/). Obviously, these are going to be mainly addressing creationist objections, but there's still things one can learn.

Amino acids are the building blocks for specialized protein molecules and all that jazz...
But life - you don't really have to go beyond the function of cells and their components.

hmmm I was merely stating that it isnt that hard to do your own research into the matter. Things like Wikipedia and Google are powerful tools they should usually be your first port of call.

For instance the link that NoXion posted for Wikipedia, it would take all of 15 seconds to find that page...

Oddly enough, mine looks like you -- except it has a load of pins stuck in it.

Wonder why...

I recommend trying to find a copy of this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0486495221/ref=s9_sdps_c1_s2_p14_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0S94766TVY1TKSCDH6D8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463383351&pf_rd_i=507846

The book lays it all out quite nicely, much better than I ever could.
