Merriam-Webster reports that socialism was the third most searched-for term (bailout was #1) during 2008 in their online dictionary, which receives 125 million views per month, meaning millions of people were looking to find out what socialism means.
Sales of The Communist Manifesto have skyrocketed, with Amazon.com reporting a 700% increase since the banking collapse
Kanikosen (The Crab Factory Ship), a Communist novel from 1929 about a group of workers rebelling against brutal working conditions on their ship, has experienced a resurgence, with sales of over 500,000 copies in 2008, up from an average of around 5,000 in previous years.

Encouraging stuff. However, we all need to ask ourselves how we can promote this trend even further in our own communities.

The thing to fear is, many will be looking via Google et al. Since it searches the words that you put in, that means:
1. Conservative rants against socialism
2. Obama et al being described as socialist
3. the left of the Labour party, SPD, etc.
4. Worst, nationalism.

Yeah, first thing I thought reading this was idiots *****ing about the bailouts being 'socialism', or relating to Obama. But the news about the selling of the manifesto is good indeed. Who knows, maybe some of those people actually decided to read what they found in their search. Although even on the internet you'll find alot of anti-socialist articles if you're not looking in the right places.

Wait, what the hell caused the link from "oh my god my life sux so bad right now" to "I think I'll buy the commie manifesto."
The bourgeoisie medias argue that:
1. Obama is socialist, marxist, and love state control on the economy.
2. Right-winger complaining about stimulus bailout as Marxist.
3. Many people mistaken Obama as Marxist because the right-winger thinks he is a Marxist therefore he must be (oxymoron).
4. Indian Maoist known as Naxalite are big bad wolf.
Another reason is that Communist (Yes the big C is emphasize as the media targeting them) is on the rise due to Nepal, Dimitris Christofias won the Cyprus presidential elections (he have link to some Communist party.) and Cuba has gained the recognization of able to take care themselves.
Don't forget the economy today is so fucking shitty and it been worse since 40 years ago.

What about memberships in communist/anarchist organizations though? It's one thing to look up "socialism" on yahoo or something. It's totally different to say "I'm a socialist" and actively participate in the international working class movement. Not that this can't result from people reading and buying the Manifesto like crazy, but there is a distinction that needs to be made clear.

While I understand the common sentiment being expressed, when you type socialism you come up with refutable Right-wing bias.

That's the part that's our job. For decades we've had the convenient excuse that "the masses don't give a shit." Suddenly, at least a certain portion, a starting place percentage, DO give a shit. Now we need to be the ones taking responsibility to walk our own talk.

Well that's our job regardless of how many Manifestos are selling. I wasn't implying revolutionary socialists are just going appear. I was saying that just because a lot more people than usual looked up socialism online or bought a book by Marx doesn't mean they're socialists.
