When did you guys become certain of what job you wanted to do? I still don't really have a clue, nothing motivates me a great deal. I've had a few ideas but they're either a bit 'meh' or I have some problems with them which would lead me to not taking that job. I'm good in humanities subjcts like sociology and politics but I don't really want to teach or anything like that. I'd quite like something more practical, hands on and beneficial to society.

Same here! I feel with you, brother.
Have you ever thought of becoming a social worker? It would be nothing for me but maybe you would like it.
And about being a journalist: you could write for a political paper/magazine.

While other careers have popped into my head through the years (had wanted to be a lawyer at one point, then a doctor), the one consistent interest and career choice that's endured from the time I was 13-14 years old is herpetologist (biologist who works with reptiles and amphibians). The only thing is, stuff always comes up and takes priority away from getting back into school and actually sticking it out until I graduate, haha. Hopefully that changes in the next year though and I end up doing field research with pit-vipers or cobras!

A cousin of mine was a social worker for awhile in Los Angeles, California. He worked primarily with homeless youth, many of which had drug problems and gang issues. I'm not sure exactly what his work entailed, but he did try to get them help in dealing with those issues and finding them places to live and work.

Well, it entails very much, here is a link to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_work).
I was actually thinking of streetworkers (i don't know if you call them streetworkers in English), who work on the street and try to help young people, who grew up under bad conditions, as Tzonteyotl described. You have to be tough and sometimes you have to work with really difficult people but you can help them to escape form their hopeless life on the streets wich often ends in a criminal career.

Depends dun it i mean you would have to tone done the radicalism but I would have no probs with say working for the BBC or writing "non-biased" articles for something such as the gaurdain.

Porn star?
Prostitute?
Drug seller?
Communications person? (Know about IT, web, and know how to read, and how to write for a variety of audiences.) (Wait, good for society..., skip that unless you work for a socialist organisation ;).)
Librarian? But you have to study that sort of stuff directly, and I'm not sure if you can do it as an undergrad.

I'm in the exact same boat - sociology major here with no idea what to do for work. I abhor the idea of being an academic, and I don't want to work for marketing research, or end up in HR and be like Toby from the Office (US).
Although it seems like a "waste" of my education, I'm thinking of just getting some trades apprenticeship training and doing that. It's more hands-on and has some sense of fulfillment, and you can usually unionize and all that.

I'll probably be getting shitty jobs off and on so I can continue playing music. And not having a permanent job will allow me to travel and continue my parkour training.

Don't worry after two and a half decades of work I still feel unmotivated. In fact, probably more so than when I started. That is what work tends to do to you.

Pretty much the same for me as for Bring It, I'm studying to become a sound engineer in highschool, and been mixing a demo for a few friends for a while now. But other than and becoming a musician, I have no idea at all what i wanna be, so my advice is just do what you want for the moment.

One usually doesn't chose what to do but takes what one can get. With the lasted economic downturn and massive set of layoffs I would image this to be increasingly these case.
