View Full Version : "Accessing" wireless internet

Hey there. I am curious as to the best ways to access password protected Wi-Fi. There are few open hot spots in my area, and many of the available connections are proprietary in nature (such as a Starbucks Wi-Fi that requires you to purchase connection time, etc). I am in the process of attempting to teach myself the inner workings of networking, programming, and other fun skills any good aspiring pirate should know, and figured practical immersion and practice might be an interesting way to go about it.

Install Ubuntu.

All the programs you could ever desire to do what you like with wireless things. (Such as Wireshark.)

Oh, and I don't endorse breaking into secured wireless networks.

As for the Starbucks thing, how does that work? Tell me what happens for someone paying money.

They probably get a code that opens up for their IP for a specific time, and then locks up when the time is up.

Figuring out a secure network's passcode by intercepting packets can be a very lengthy ordeal. Unless it's a really high traffic network, it could take you many, many, many hours sitting there intercepting packets.

There's a handy article on computer security in one of the Rolling Thunders.

I have wifi in my home, but the PSP still can't find the signal.

It's very frustrating.

While Ubuntu is great, I would recommend Backtrack 3. Its a distro of linux that comes packed with all the tools you will need to crack WEP encryption

Nah, it can actually be done in 5-10 minutes. Because even if you aren't connected to the network, you can still add traffic by authenticating and deauthenticating over and over.

What about with Itouch or Iphone?

Can someone tell me more about these Ubuntu programs that do all those wireless things?

I once knew some kids who hacked into wireless networks. It didn't take them that long. But from what a friend of mine said, it takes alot of techie knowledge. Like maybe it took these kids like 10 minutes to hack, and my friend said it would take him like 30 minutes maybe. Makes me think I just wouldn't even bother at this stage of my current techie knowledge.

Then again, they weren't using Ubuntu, hehe.

For shit like starbucks paid Wi-Fi, you can copy the HTML and related code from the starbucks wireless network login page (where you physically do the payment), set up an ad-hoc network from your computer and forward anyone's browser that tries to access the internet through your box to the same HTML (..etc.) who has already paid such that they will enter their login information and send it to you.

There's a lot of subtle wizardry invovled in actually pulling something like that off, making it probably just easier to find your local "linksys" (thank you people who don't know how to password protect their networks!).

You can also use something like aircrack to sniff packets, but that requires some degree of technical knowledge and study.

http://nmap.org/ [Nmap is the fundamental tool for all network hacking and penetration testing]

http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php [great tool for WEP/WPA password recovery, after you have gathered some packets]

http://www.wireshark.org/ [a sophisticated packet sniffer]

Here is a general list of penetration testing tools from insecure.org

What about them?

They are locked down aren't they? It's like asking, how can I crack wireless networks with a PSP.

How about doing a Google search, and if you can't find anything, assume you can't?

Or, I guess, maybe, you could unlock it, and install Wireshark (not that I know if it is even available for those things).

System -> Administration -> Synaptic

Search for "aircrack" and "wireshark", that should bring up all the tools you need. (Or, also "nmap" if you want.)

i keep my wireless internet password-less and dont care if i share it with people. Is there any damage that can be done to my computer?

Yes, but password protecting your wireless network wouldn't necessarily prevent that either. Any amateur malicious hacker could easily penetrate WEP encryption, and WPA isn't too much more difficult (although I don't know how to do it).

Ya, people (not excluding me) just do it with a laptop WEP-crack if they want free wi-fi somewhere they frequent (specificly corps live starbucks or cafes)

Altho ever sense they did the major javescript update about 6months ago, it's ALOT harder.

Also if your desperate go get a dictionary password finder

Not really that much but if lotsa ppl use it then it gets slow
Just make sure your desktop is set as network admin and it has a good password!

It depends. If you don't know anything about security, fuck yes. Secure your wireless network right now.

If you do, then you've already secured all your computers and have set up your printer to only accept jobs from certain MAC addresses, and you don't have any file shares etc.

If you don't know what you are doing, you are doing it wrong. Secure your network, right now.

Actually, WPA is quite hard to crack if you use a decent passphrase. A random 30 char one is going to mean that no one is going to crack it in a hurry. And you don't have to remember that passphrase either.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if the NSA could crack it if they really wanted to (Wikipedia has some information about speed), but they have other methods for getting your information.

Playing games online with a PSP isn't all that fun all the games I've played online there has been usually a only 100 people online it's boring.
