Think it is funny that non-capitalist systems seems to be acceptable by mainstream media if they are cloaked in a religious shroud.

I think the reason for Bhutan being tolerated or well-liked by the western media is also the cause of the Dalai Lama's popularity in the west: A "benevolent" theocratic absolute ruler who lovingly cares for his subjects and wants them all to be happy. Also, it seems to be quite fascinating to have a quasi-medieval feudal society with a god on top alive and well for your TV people to make a romanticizing documentation about. (I didn't actually watch the youtube vid, but read about Bhutan and that "Gross National Happiness"-Stuff some time ago.

It's allowed because its economy is largely pre-industrial and it does not have diplomatic relations with the United States.
