Well, you see: Before the late 19th centuary (and certainly when America was being colonised), the rules of football (or futeball as it was known back then) had not been set out yet. This led to constant blurring of what was acceptable, including picking up the ball and running with it.
This led to the slow evolution of the different ball games we know as Football, Rugby, American Football and Australian Football (the latter three being quite similar to each other).
Nobody is quite sure where the father of football comes from, but it is thought to be a strange mix of Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Vicking ball sports.
Hope this answers your question:)

The problem with shitty American football is that it's crap. It's the kind of thing hyperactive kids on speed would have made in Physical Education. Americans tend to find your football boring and shitty, it's all relative. What I find strange is this anger that anyone on earth dare to enjoy a game that isn't internationally popular.
Me, I prefer Lacrosse and basketball, but I love football. It's more of a game of chess than a fluid back and forth game like basketball or soccer. The individual players may or may not be dumb (depending on the position they play they may need to be quite tactically aware), but the strategy and complexity involved makes for a fun game to watch.

I do have very critical opinions on the current situation of the game, the fact, like British football, that everything is controlled by money. It is more a measure of how rich a team is than how good the players are. However that does not dispute it always is an incredible watch.

I disagree, every team these days has massive spending power, and the salary cap that was relatively recently introduced (to prevent dynasties, like that stopped new england lol) works pretty well. There aren't any down and out teams. In fact, as it's been shown in baseball in regards to the yankees (mets fan here, just making a point), every team rakes in plenty of cash. Some owners decide to put more of their profits back into the teams than others. Any team could spend as much as any other team (and they do, thanks to the cap)
I'd imagine that internationally, with a much more vast array of teams, that there would be markets that simply didn't raise enough money to compete, though.

Ha! There was a great shitty thing earlier on about how NFL is so democratic.
It's meant to be "Socialist" because it carefully and supposedly fairly hands out money and regulation to all the teams and players so that no one cheats.
Yeah, that's why commercials in the middle of the game by Obama et al net them so much bloody money.
The game itself is ok, GOOD football as in soccer, by the likes of George Best is just excellent to watch, I'm sure the equivalent football as in not-really-football at such a talented level is also great to watch, although most of the time watching quarterbacks make it half way looks is kind of (in my experience), well it's fun for a while then it gets boring (sat through the 2004 superbowl, ne patriots vs some other team I can't remember the name of).

Understanding from group psychology will aid the effort to reduce unhealthy competition. Practical measures like meeting and befriending the opposing team (or their supporters) will dramatically reduce violence and abuse between different groups.

Without the padding there would be serious injuries caused to every single player in every game. Hardly practical hey? The reason there is much more padding compared to other sports is because of the level of contact.

not true, (this might seem to contradict my earlier statement about padding but it doesn't, its just another problem related to padding) why do more Amarican football players get in the end seriously hurt than rugby players? the same reason that more profesional boxers get serious health problem than MMA fighters.
padding might seem to protect you but in the end it can kill you (look at Mohamed Ali and his parkinson), with padding you can hit other people harder without injuring yourself and you can take more without going out, sustained repetive trauma is way more dangerous than direct trauma, for example; the statiscal amount of fatalities in boxing has risen dramaticly since they don't fight bareknuckel anymore

Patronizing and arrogant would be taking the position that it's ok to insult people in america or things americans like because our government is run by bad men. This total lack of perspective on bigotry (it's bad directed against oppressed people but fine when it's turned around on average americans) is (part) of the reason conflict has been a constant in human history.
I still don't understand why so many of you are angry that a group of people haven't assimilated and submitted to everyone else's tastes. Why should you care? Especially when most of you seem to know nothing about football in the first place. Killfacer, you seem especially ignorant, and because of your willingness to run your mouth in spite of that, especially stupid. You obviously haven't been to many games if you think there's no tension between fans. We're just not stupid enough to go out and riot at the end of a game. The idea that you would riot over the results of such a boring game is actually really puzzling.
And of course more people watch the world cup or whateer you call it, we're one country playing our own sport. We're also much bigger than europe combined, so we really don't need to compete with other countries to have a good football season. So many idiots fail to recognize that there are diverse regions in america that have mutual animosity often times and compete with each other.
To americans soccer is a children's game. Adults usually have no interest in it. It's not like we're ignorant of the game, many of us played on teams as kids. It just doesn't suit most people's tastes. At least we know what soccer is and why we think it's shit, while most have you have watched a superbowl once and decided you hate football (superbowls are usually blow outs, any fan could tell you that).

Killfacer you embody all that people claim to hate in americans, you're arrogant, stupid, you don't back up your claims and you're obnoxious as all hell.
Fuck you and your eurocentric bullshit.
Scratch my last reply. I'm going to give you good rep for doing me over.

Name me one other national sport that is as cerebral, complex, and strategic as American football.
 You're joking right?
It has some strategic elements but cerebral, give me a break.
Sports isn't just about mindless athleticism like running the fastest or elegant bicycle kicks. No, it's about strategy, about being nimble, and about thinking up a plan and executing it. These elements are present to a lesser degree in other sports, but in American football, they come to fruition.
There is just as much strategy in football as there is in American football.
If you don't believe me, buy a football (as in soccer) strategy game, I've played Maiden NFL games and believe you me, a good few of the soccer ones are much more complex than that shit. It's just further proof that there is more to the game than you think. ;)

That said, being hurled abuse at by 15 heavily built dimmards, I think the noble art of verbal abuse would only get so far.

sorry raiders suck, they dont got anything on the falcons. Soccer or boring football sucks. I'd rather see a big hit than to see players running back and forth not scoring until the end. But I do like to watch international soccer and I also like the penalty kicks at the end of a tie game, but still it isnt better than seeing your team down 3 at the 20 trying to score with 2 min. left in the game for a win. For you Europeans who say American Football sucks, you should come to the parties I throw.:thumbup1:

Americans tend to find your football boring and shitty, it's all relative. What I find strange is this anger that anyone on earth dare to enjoy a game that isn't internationally popular.
No we don't you ass. Us Americans with any worth find soccer very entertaining. It's better to watch teams go at it for 45 mins without stops than watching a bunch of obese men huddle and talk for a minute then have a 7 second play and then huddle for another minute.
Go to a soccer game and get drunk. It's tons of fun.

What was that about patronizing and arrogant? We have no interest in it? Is that why LA Galaxy games are always sold out? Sure MLS isn't with the big 3(NBA,MLB,NFL) yet but we will get there.
Now if you want to know what makes english people really sound stupid is when they make fun of the fact that we call it soccer and then go on about how in the NFL feet are barely used... They fucking made the word soccer! The real name of the sport is Association Football. They used to call it soccer back in the day too but then it became more popular than rugby so they just called soccer football. Football is a family of games including soccer, rugby, gridiron(american) etc...
After we win the world cup in 2010 the English won't be so patronizing towards us. I mean they invented the game and have what.... one World Cup win. :P

Ah piss off. We fucked all of you in the olympics, as did our former colonies. Face it, if you used to belong to us, then you're set up for success. (Hence why the dutch fail at everything).

Eh too bad they've been shitty since the Bucs wallopped em in that Super Bowl...
But I'd rather watch them lose then grown men running around in circles kicking a ball around. Soccer is lame as hell.....
Nothing compares to the physical punishment that is the NFL.....

not too be a chauvinistic nationalist but clearly you dont follow; ice skating, kickboxing, rings, judo, taekwando, field hockey, international baseball, prancing a horse around, until recently football (soccer), swimming etc etc...
for a country the size of one of your county's the dutch dominate or compete for the top position in quite a few sports.

I've never actually watched a game of American football or know anything about how it's played.
What I do know, however, is that they seem to wear excessive armour and padding whilst doing seemingly the exact same thing as rugby players who wear mostly none at all.
Ironically I presume they think it makes them look more masculine padding up their shoulders to the size of bowling balls.

In fairness, (this is my understanding, it may be incorrect) any kind of tackle is allowed. You can spear someone in their chest and not be sin binned. In rugby, as you probably know, it's illegal to do high tackles.

Exactly.
Plus, those pads aren't leather or some other such bullshit, they're very hard plastic, the helmet being the hardest of all. The pads make it hurt more, not less. Or, at the least, the increase the damage one can do to the body of another person.
