My brother is thinking about getting me the Communism Manifesto in book form for my birthday this April. Would it be in a book store do you think? Thanks.

Yes. You should be able to find it in any major and local bookstore.

By the way, it's the Communist Manifesto.

It's so short that it wouldn't be much of a book. It's a short essay. Why don't you get The Marx-Engels Reader by Robert C. Tucker. Paperback book about four centimeters think. It has the writings that are viewed as the most important.

Haha yeah I know its Communist. Don't even know why I kept writing Communism..... Weird....

Anyway yeah thanks a lot! I'll tell him about that.

I got a copy of the Manifesto (Penguin Publisher) for $17.66 SGD, quite good I must say.

It's a short essay.

No its a pamphlet.

Also there are several publishers that sell paperback versions for 5 or 10 bucks. A better present would be a full version of Das Kapital.

Don't bother buying it. You can get it free from either Marxists.org or Project Gutenburg (Or whatever it's called). Also, it does contain certain parts (see the ten planks) which were later referred to as antiquated. Hell, it's more of a propaganda pamphlet for the times, get Capital instead. Or read that free, though it's more comfortable reading it in book form, though the manifesto is short, and less important, therefore it's not worth spending anything on it.

Agreed. There are dozens of copies online. Soviet-Empire has a copy as does even the world socialist website.

If you really want to buy a copy go for the Penguin Classics. Cheap cheap!

If you really want to buy a copy go for the Penguin Classics. Cheap cheap!Yep. My Penguin edition came with an introduction from Gareth Stedman Jones - not particularly positive or good but it does provide historical context for the Manifesto and traces the philosophical evolution of Marx's early writings

The actual pamphlet is available on Marxists.org, as mentioned, but if its a present then its not going to do any harm. It'll be cheap and its important enough as a historical document to warrant owning a hard copy

Das Kapital is so freaking long...
True, but reading long books makes you look smart. :D
Also, it's far more helpful than the commie manifesto.

True true. I've heard that Vol 2 of Das Kapital is a better read than the other two volumes though?

A version that has the several new introductions written by Marx and Engels bewtween the 1847 edition and the 1896 edition is best IMO.

Engels annotated later editions to bring the manifesto up to date with then current developments. It still retains much of its value so it's definitely worth owning and studying.

I didn't buy this issue, but at my library there is a rather large one, I think with analysis about the actual manifesto, but I only read the manifesto. But I'm sure that one's cheap. I think it may actually be this Penguin classic one a few people have mentioned.

Damn! I should get a copy. I have only read it online. Not sure how my dad would react to that though...

Yeah my Dad's what we are kinda worried about. My mom's cool with it, but I would never tell my dad. Just gonna have to give it to me behind closed doors haha.

I stole my copy of my commie friend, to become even more commie than him.

And whatever the people on this thread say, don't read Das Kapital first.

Good advice. Das Kapital is difficult. Instead i'm studying Marxist Economics online.
