In the Marxist paradigm, revolution is the revolutionary transformation of capitalism into communism (not into socialism, but namely, into communism of the lower phase).

"Between capitalist and communist society there lies the period of the revolutionary transformation of the one into the other. Corresponding to this is also a political transition period in which the state can be nothing but the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat." (from marxism)

The upper axis shows the dialectic of the change of the mode of production during the transition period. As the graph clearly shows, there are only 2 modes of production during the transition period: (1) capitalist mode of production (blue and light blue), practiced in the state-capitalist sector of the economy and in the remnants of the private sector of the economy, and (2) Communist mode of production (red color), practiced in the non-market moneyless economy or, in other words, in the nascent society of the lower phase of communism. Note - there is no "socialist" mode of production for the transition period on this graph, as Marx and Engels do not have it in their theory.

The lower axis shows the political restructuring of society from capitalism to communism. It is also clear that the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie needs to be replaced by the dictatorship of the proletariat at the time of the political revolution. The duration of the proletarian dictatorship is directly related to the duration of the Proletarian state's existence (shown in maroon) and the duration of the Proletarian state's existence is directly related to the existence of a capitalist mode of production in the transition period until this mode of production would be completely dialectically replaced by a Communist mode of production.

The Proletarian state develops proletarian democracy during the transition period , that is, a democratic institution called "self-management". The application of self-management in practice should take place in the Communist production sector of the economy, where there is no state governing of production and distribution of consumer goods. Here in the Communist sector, the full extent of the proletariat ceases to be the proletariat and society becomes classless.

The graph clearly shows that the process of gradual disappearance of the Proletarian state (the state is withering away) coincides with the disappearance of the economy based on the capitalist mode of production. That is, during the transition period the Proletarian state consciously and purposefully creates an adversarial system of two independent economic sectors with two dialectically opposing modes of production: capitalist and communist.

The Communist sector (commune) is created exclusively on a VOLUNTARY basis from those who are willing to consciously apply the Communist production relations of the lower phase in practice. Inside the commune, proletarians cease to be proletarians because of the existence of self-management and the lack of a wage labour in the commune, there is a germ of classless society. The Proletarian state DOES NOT FORCE anyone into the Communist sector. For those proletarians who are not ready for Communist production relations, it is proposed to remain in the state-capitalist or private sector of the economy (in the private sector, a Union is mandatory).

Human freedom is a fundamental point in Communist ideology. Freedom is above all freedom of choice. In the Proletarian state, proletarians (like all other levels/classes in society) are offered a free choice to join the Communist sector of the economy or to remain in the private or state-capitalist sector of the economy. If the Communist sector, implying a classless society, becomes more attractive to proletarians, the labor force will flow from the capitalist sector to the Communist. The commune will gradually grow to the size of the whole society, thus taking away labor resources from the private and state-capitalist sector. The Proletarian state will gradually wither away.

This is the dialectical transformation of capitalist society into Communist society, transformation of the one into the other.
