Eduard Bernstein, 1895

Bernstein was one of the authors of the Erfurt Programme, and became emblematic of the growing revisionism within the SPD. He is best known for popularizing the concept of reformist "socialism", the idea that capitalism could gradually evolve into socialism.

Strangely enough, he used to be considered one of the big disciples of Marx and Engels, but he took a huge turn to the right in the 1890's. He represented the rightist deviation in Social-Democracy; Rosa Luxemburg the leftist, anarchistic deviation; and Kautsky was the revolutionary centre, at the time.
  3. That's actually a pretty good explanation of the social democrat scene in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The early social democratic movement was revolutionary. It's something that is too often left unresearched by most modern revolutionaries. Lenin proudly considered himself a social-democrat. It was only after 1917 that he decided to take up the name communist instead, but most Social Democrats prior to 1914 were communists. Kautsky wasn't always a scumbag, and Lenin quotes him a lot favorably in his early writings.
  5. Their is a major difference between pre-war Kautsky and post-war Kautsky, which makes me a little suspicious that he was an opportunist.
  6. oops, I meant "there is"

That he became an opportunist is correct, but that he somehow "was" an opportunist (i.e., the whole time) is very misleading.

Depends on the time frame you are talking about. He abandoned Marxism in the 1890's.
